November 20th, 2006 - Chapter 10 Complete
Well this is a bit old as far as news goes but I haven't been updating lately due to the fact that I hadn't been working on the plane lately. Man does having a job really cramp your style when It comes to building. Here I am on vacation... Happily working away. Lesson: I have got to work less at work and work more in the garage somehow... Anyway... On this chapter: The canard is complete due to a bit of stragegic purchasing. Dennis Oelmann builds canards and wings for the cozy IV and since I was close to starting the canard (I actually have all of the foam and stuff needed for this chapter and the next couple) I bought it from Dennis. I wrote an article on this on the main section of this site that you can read here if you like; but the long and short of it is, Dennis does FANTASTIC work, comes with plenty of references, and I like flying and am not building fast enough so this will speed the process by quite a lot. I may do the same when I get to the wings. So Dennis' excellent work starts with the box that he ships the canard to you in (left). It's big... Is the first thing you will say. (Make sure you have a square head bit when you start unscrewing the box. ) My advice is keep the box and when you are done looking at it, put the whole thing right back in the box until you are ready to install. The ususal lookers on were present any time there is "activity in the area". (center) When I finally got the 9,223 screws out, to get the lid off I saw my new canard. (right) It's upside down in the box. I unboxed it and carefully placed it upon my jig table. (left) and noticed that as it was getting dark out that the sky was turning purple and beautiful.. The sort of evening that it is great to be flying to watch the sun go down. (center) I took some pictures of some of the details. Attach points are on the right.
After a bit, I built up a stand so that I didn't set the canard down on the counterweights and took some more pictures of the perfect wingtips and various other angles.
